JOLIET – A semitrailer driver from Pennsylvania was cited after his brakes caught fire and his vehicle blocked traffic on CenterPoint Way, police said.
On Monday morning, Ernest J. Dumond, 54, of Ruffs Dale, Pennsylvania, was driving a semitrailer on Interstate 80 when the brakes were reportedly dragging and smoking, Joliet Deputy Police Chief Ed Gregory said. Dumond pulled over to cool off the brakes and then exited the highway.
The brakes dragged again but he allegedly continued to drive after deciding he could make it to a Home Depot warehouse, Gregory said. The brakes then caught fire once more, he said.
Dumond was in the 2500 block of CenterPoint Way and his semitrailer blocked traffic for more than two hours as firefighters tried to put out the fire from his truck, Gregory said. CenterPoint Way is a major traffic area for semitrailer drivers.
The damage to the trailer was estimated to be $9,000, he said.
Dumond was cited for blocking the streets with trucks.
