Silver Cross Hospital to implement visitor restrictions during flu season

NEW LENOX – Silver Cross Hospital is implementing temporary visitation restrictions during flu season.

The restriction comes from directives by the Illinois Department of Public Health and the Will County Health Department, according to a news release from the hospital. An average of about 3,500 people per year die due at least in part to influenza and pneumonia in Illinois, according to the IDPH.

The restrictions for Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox and the Silver Cross Health & Emergency Center in Homer Glen include:

• No visitor under the age of 18 will be allowed to visit

• A limit of two visitors per room

• Individuals with a fever, cough, sore throat, vomiting and/or diarrhea should postpone visiting patients until they have been symptom-free for 24 hours

• Patients in isolation for influenza will have visitors at the caregivers’ discretion and must comply with wearing masks

• Everyone must wash their hands before, during and after visiting patients

Anyone with flu symptoms should contact their primary care doctor. Residents can call 1-800-Teladoc 24/7 or go to Silver Cross Urgent Care at 1051 Essington Road, Joliet, for diagnosis and treatment.

If it is a life-threatening condition, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department, the hospital advises. Silver Cross operates emergency departments in New Lenox and Homer Glen.
