Winter weather advisory in effect in Kane, DuPage, Cook counties

A winter weather advisory is in effect until 6 p.m. Sunday in Kane, DuPage and Cook counties, according to the National Weather Service.

Total snow accumulations of 2 to 4 inches are expected.

"Be prepared for reduced visibilities at times," stated the weather service. "Snowfall rates may reach one half inch per hour mid-morning through early afternoon."

A winter weather advisory for snow means periods of snow will cause primarily travel difficulties.

"Be prepared for snow-covered roads and limited visibility, and use caution while driving," stated the weather service.

A hazardous weather outlook has been issued this week for north central Illinois, northeast Illinois and northwest Indiana.

"A band of snow will impact holiday travel through this afternoon," stated the weather service. "Snowfall amounts are expected to range from 1 to 2 inches across far northern
Illinois to 3 to 6 inches along and south of Interstate 80. Lake-effect snow is expected across northwest Indiana, where snow amounts of 4 to 7 inches are possible near Lake Michigan.

"A period of moderate to heavy snow is possible, when snowfall rates between one half and one inch per hour will be possible during the late morning and early afternoon, especially for areas along and south of Interstate 80. The snow is expected to be over by sunset late this afternoon, except in far northwest Indiana, where lake-effect snow may linger into Sunday evening. Much colder air will arrive tonight."
