ELMHURST – The Elmhurst Police Department began a holiday safety campaign Dec. 18 that will continue through Jan. 1, according to a police department news release.
Periodic roadside safety checkpoints are set up throughout the year as part of a yearlong grant from the Illinois Department of Transportation that provides funding for additional enforcement of driving under the influence, distracted driving and seat belt laws, according to the release.
The majority of this extra enforcement will take place during the overnight hours, which is statistically the most dangerous time to be on the roadway, the release stated.
Motorists are encouraged to drive carefully, to buckle up and to avoid drinking alcohol when driving. Anyone who plans to be drinking alcohol during holiday activities and festivities should make alternate transportation arrangements, the release stated. People witnessing drunken drivers on the road are asked to report it to the police.
