DOWNERS GROVE – At a time when children tend to be focused on what they’re getting for Christmas, students at Hillcrest Elementary School are busy helping to meet the needs of the less fortunate.

The Student Council at the Downers Grove school, 1435 Jefferson Ave., is running a coat drive in conjunction with a similar effort underway at Downers Grove South High School.

The drive, dubbed "Heat the Homeless," continues through Dec. 15. The school also is accepting hats, gloves, scarves and snow pants. So far, the school has received about 25 coats.

“I expected a lot of coats, and the drive is not over yet,” said Sofia Scacco, president of the Student Council.

Sofia said the council decided to sponsor the coat drive to help those in need.

“It’s really sad that some people are out in the cold,” said Sofia, a sixth-grader.

She said the Student Council worked hard to promote the coat drive and has received donations from families, teachers and staff.

“We can get a lot done when we put our minds to it,” she said.

Council members distributed fliers and created posters that are on display throughout the school. Sofia has promoted the coat drive during morning announcements as well, she said.

“We’ve been working really hard,” she said.

Student Council members also promoted the drive at the November meeting of the Downers Grove Grade School District 58 Board of Education.

Sofia's mother, Brandee, also has gotten in on the act by promoting the initiative on social media.

“I’m definitely very proud of her,” Brandee Scacco said.
