To the editor:
Once again, it’s time for giving thanks.
As in past years, I must send my deep thanks to the hundreds of generous, loyal west suburban residents who donated blood for the patients in our hospitals, many of whose lives were saved.
On Nov. 14, we had our final drive of this year – our sixth annual Turkey Drive – when all of the 30 donors went home with free turkeys for donating a pint of blood.
The totals from that drive also brought up our numbers for 2017 to 428 units collected.
On top of that, we have collected 25,826 units since our birth in 1974. That’s more than enough of “the gift of life” to serve 70,000 patients.
A high point this year came on Oct. 14, when 8 inches of rain fell in one day. The torrents could not stop our donors from helping those people who are less fortunate. Despite the storm, 87 donors drove in from as far as Elgin and Lemont. We collected 82 units – a “miracle drive.”
Four weeks ago, the Illinois State Senate along with the Illinois Coalition of Community Blood Centers honored our organization.
Again, our thanks go out to the State Senate, the [Illinois Coalition of Community Blood Centers] and our extraordinary donors.
