JOLIET – A Crest Hill man who strangled his wife two years ago was sentenced to 30 years in prison, county prosecutors said.
The killer, 29-year-old Cesar Garcia, had pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in August and admitted to killing his wife, Laura Gonzalez, 22.
Gonzalez’s lifeless body was found in bed in her Marlboro Lane apartment in August 2015, according to a Will County State’s Attorney’s Office news release.
Police officers conducted a well-being check at Gonzalez’s apartment and found her body on a bed with Garcia lying next to her. Garcia, who previously had been charged with domestic violence, was disoriented and lethargic, prosecutors said.
Concerned relatives had contacted the police after they were unable to get in touch with Gonzalez, a prosecutor previously said. Garcia admitted to police that he strangled Gonzalez in the kitchen of the apartment, telling her “if he can’t have her, no one else will,” according to the news release. Gonzalez had become involved in a new relationship and had been trying to end her relationship with Garcia.
After her murder, Garcia moved Gonzalez’s body to the bedroom, made superficial cuts to his wrist, swallowed pills and took two sips of a household cleaner.
Gonzalez suffered injuries to her head and face as well as cuts to her wrists.
Garcia and Gonzalez lived together until June 2015, when Garcia was charged domestic battery against Gonzalez and ordered not to have any contact with her, according to court records.
