Watts said the two Jewel stores in Elmhurst have been asking shoppers during checkout since Nov. 1 whether they would like to contribute toward Thanksgiving dinners for families that come to the Elmhurst-Yorkfield Food Pantry. Jewel will then provide dinners to the food pantry for distribution, she said.
The food pantry has served more than 950 families throughout 2017, an increase of 30 percent from last year, Watts said. Those communities are Addison, Bensenville, Berkeley, Hillside, Lombard, Oak Brook, Elmhurst and Villa Park.
How to help
Elmhurst Elks Thanksgiving basket dinners cost about $30 per family. Checks can be made out to Elmhurst Elks, with "Thanksgiving Baskets" on the memo line, and dropped off at or mailed to the lodge: Elmhurst Elks Lodge 1531, 711 W. St. Charles Road, Elmhurst, IL 60126-3025. Volunteers also can come to the lodge at 8 a.m. Nov. 18 to help assemble dinners. To get involved at the all-volunteer Elmhurst-Yorkfield Food Pantry, visit eyfp.org or call Janet Cox at 630-975-1149.
