Many more children will be a big part of the event as well.
At least 20 fourth- and fifth-grade voice students from Edison and Jefferson elementary schools will serenade the crowds with traditional Christmas carols, said Jeremy Nemec, the K-8 general music and vocal music coordinator for Elmhurst Community Unit School District 205.
"It's a good opportunity. They're really excited," he said. "A lot of them go to this event anyways, and so the fact that they decided to do this, their families are really excited to be there too. .. It's just a nice way to kind of bring the community together. Good musical experience, getting them out of their comfort zone a little bit, allowing them to take risks."
This event will be the first performance outside of the school buildings for some of the students, Nemec said, adding he has been reassuring those students and helping them realize that people want them to do well.
"I tell them, 'You know what, you're not by yourself. You are singing with a group of people who all have the same goal. And that's to touch people's hearts with music.' And that's what we do in our choirs," Nemec said.
