As the seasons are changing and fall colors bring to mind the traditional Thanksgiving holiday, I have fond memories of many Thanksgiving holidays of the past, and I look forward to spending this Thanksgiving with my family.
What I learned from my parents and grandparents at Thanksgiving through the years I am passing on to my children and grandchildren.
Love each other, charity begins at home, count your blessings, be thankful for what you have and be generous to those less fortunate than yourself.
At York Township, we are thankful for the individuals, corporations and organizations who so generously support York Township programs and services with their cash and in-kind donations.
One of our generous supporters and a very worthy cause in its own right is the Dan Gibbons Turkey Trot, which I participate in every Thanksgiving morning. I urge all of you to find it in your heart to participate in some way in the 34th annual Dan Gibbons Turkey Trot on Nov. 23. The registration fee is $35. You can register online at www.dangibbonsturkeytrot.com or call 630-415-2816 for more information. Cash donations are always graciously accepted and go to benefit all the causes of the Dan Gibbons Turkey Trot, which include the York Township Food Pantry among others.
I am also thankful for our York Township employees and volunteers who donate their time and efforts at this time of the year to make York Township Senior Center, Food Pantry and General Assistance Holiday Programs possible. With their help, we will distribute to our pantry clients 120 turkey dinners this year for Thanksgiving, compliments of Lombard Juniors and Friends of York Township.
This is also the time of year that we gear up for our York Township Adopt A Family for Christmas and Toys for Tots programs through which we helped 159 families with 412 children last year. These families received gifts and toys all donated by local organizations, churches, schools, businesses and families.
If you would like to make a donation to help provide food for a York Township family on Thanksgiving or Adopt A Family for Christmas, please visit York Township Hall at 1502 S. Meyers Road in Lombard or call us at 630-620-2400 to find out how you can help.
