The district is forced to consider "what if" scenarios, she said. For example, the size of next year's kindergarten class and the number of new families weighs heavily on any decision.
The case-by-case approach would offer the district more flexibility, be based on actual enrollment numbers and limit the impact on current students and families, Cremascoli said.
However, transportation and communication concerns accompany both options, she said.
Highland Elementary School, 3935 Highland Ave., serves an area bounded roughly by Ogden Avenue, 33rd Street, Williams Street and Highland Avenue.
Nearby Belle Aire Elementary School, 3935 Belle Aire Lane, could be the destination for Highland students affected by attendance boundary modifications.
Concerns over boundary changes were first raised last year when a demographer’s study indicated the student population at Highland was expected to grow rapidly. Belle Aire also is expected to grow, though not as quickly as Highland. However, Belle Aire has been underutilized and has unused space.
