The current owners of the house – located in the 1S700 block of Hawthorne Lane near Wheaton – hired workers to start razing the building Sept. 29. The house was designed by Hunt, who also designed the House of Seven Gables, a historic 1897 mansion that was slated for demolition to make way for a housing subdivision before a Wheaton couple stepped forward to move it.
"The loss of the Taber house makes the few remaining Jarvis Hunt homes more precious and more in need of our protection," Wheaton Historic Commission Chairwoman Nancy Flannery said in an email. "The fact that the Taber house was in unincorporated Wheaton and under the DuPage County control illustrates the need for a historic preservation ordinance that will apply to both city and county. I am appalled that this valuable Jarvis Hunt house was destroyed."
