Police: Plainfield man makes up tale of retaliation for not giving cigarettes

JOLIET – A Plainfield man allegedly lied to the police about being struck in the head after declining to give another man cigarettes, authorities said.

On Thursday afternoon, Adly W. Mekhail, 61, of the 14200 block of South Lakeridge Drive, told officers that when he went into the Shell gas station at 3021 Plainfield Road, a 47-year-old man demanded cigarettes from him, said Joliet Deputy Police Chief Ed Gregory.

When Mekhail declined, he told the cops that the man struck him in the head. However, surveillance footage from the gas station apparently showed the man never touched Mekhail, Gregory said.

Mekhail reportedly went to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center for his injuries anyway. Gregory said he had no idea why Mekhail would allegedly fabricate the story.

Mekhail was charged with filing a false police and released on his own recognizance.
