Suburban Life Sound Off: Sept. 11-17

What would happen if natural disaster strikes Illinois?

In response to the letter on Houston's building codes and lack of state income taxes, when I bought my home there, part of the requirements was having inspections for building codes. There may be areas in the entire area that don't come under that law, but I assure you there are also zoning laws as well, which I experienced also in my area. The wonderful state of Texas has no income taxes because unlike this state, it is solvent. What would happen here if a horrific storm happened in Illinois due to whatever weather [phenomenon]. Even though there are tremendous taxes collected here, already there would be no funds to help people as the state cannot even pay the debts they currently have. Maybe they would enforce another "sugar tax" or add additional taxes on the struggling population that are trying to survive here. Let's try to remember all of us everywhere are in need of help sometimes unless you are one of the extremely rich that probably made a lot of it off the backs of the struggling few.

Health care for all

What would health care look like if Jesus wrote the legislation? Certainly he would not deny health care to 22 to 32 million Americans. Certainly he would not advocate block grants to the states and exacerbate the hodgepodge of health care coverage around the country. And certainly he would not try to gut health care so as to have money to give tax breaks to the wealthy and corporations. No, he would write legislation that covers all Americans. Covering all Americans would reduce the costs by having the largest possible risk pool. Costs would be lowered even more by treating medical issues early before they become serious. Having the government administer the program would eliminate the for-profit insurance company costs and management bonuses. Employers would no longer have the expense of providing employee health care. Employees would no longer pay premiums or have high deductibles and co-pays. Drug costs could be reduced by negotiating lower prices. Jesus would certainly craft legislation that is compassionate, sensible and truly addresses the health care needs of all Americans.

Prevalence of religious clubs at public schools

In Downers Grove, there is a Muslim club at [Downers Grove] North High School. Can other religions have clubs and meet at the public high school?

Official U.S. language

I just received a piece of mail that says, "House must vote to make English the official language." The return is from Springfield, Va. Seriously, are we [having] to fight to keep our English language? There is something very wrong with the United States of America.
