RIVERSIDE – A construction crew discovered skeletal remains shortly before 1 p.m. Sept. 14 in the 100 block of Bloomingbank Road in Riverside, near a well-documented Native American burial ground, according to a Riverside Police Department news release.
The crew was working on a sewer project when one of the crew members who was operating an excavator unearthed the remains.
Skeletal remains have been found in this area in the past, and there was no indication of foul play, the release stated. However, Riverside police conducted a death investigation like they would at any other crime scene, and the remains were brought to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.
An external examination was performed Sept. 16, and the cause of death is pending, according to the Medical Examiner's Office report.
The 100 block of Bloomingbank Road was shut down to traffic while the skeletal remains were completely excavated and transported to the Medical Examiner's Office. The on-scene medical examiner confirmed the recovered bones were old, according to the release.
