Soccer: Clarke, Lyons top Glenbard West in conference opener

Lyons Township soccer

Charlie Clarke had Lyons' first goal on a penalty kick, and later assisted Mike Niedermeyer's score to lead the Lions past Glenbard West 3-2 in their West Suburban Silver conference opener on Sept. 7 in Glen Ellyn.

Nick Jacobs scored the other goal for the Lions (4-3-1, 1-0). Matt Vear had five saves in goal.

Lyons lost to Streamwood 2-1 on Sept. 9 at the Pepsi Showdown.

Lyons Township cross country

Led by individual race winner Danny Kilrea, the Lions boys team took sixth place at the First to the Finish Invitational on Sept. 9 in Peoria.

Kilrea was clocked in 14:02.3 – 46 seconds faster than his closest pursuer. Other runners for Lyons included Costello (35th, 15:30.8), Patrick Kane (51st, 15:43.1), Jake Ehlert (89th, 15:59.5), Charles Harders (99th, 16:04.7), Michael Smith (111th, 16:08.5) and Owen Hayes (112th, 16:08.7). Downers Grove North was the team champion with Hinsdale Central second.

The Lions girls team took ninth place. Naperville North won the meet and Yorkville was second.

Emiy Henkel was Lyons' first runner to cross the finish line, clocked in 17:56.4 for 15th place. She was followed by teammates Cara Paliakas (52nd, 18:52.6), Maddie Cranny (56th, 18:54.7), Marta Kogucki (60th, 18:56.7), Kirsten Meyer (75th, 19:08.1), Nora Whelton (124, 19:42.8) and Maggie Abbs (135th, 19:57.7).

The Mustangs, seeded first in the ChicagoTOPSoccer Bracket, beat Minooka in penalty kicks 4-2 in the first round of the PepsiCo Showdown on Sept. 9 in Oakbrook. Morton previously beat Andrew 3-0 on Sept. 7.
