DOWNERS GROVE – Downers Grove Mayor Martin Tully will run for a seat on the DuPage County Board in 2018.
The veteran mayor announced Sept. 7 that he will seek a seat representing District 3. Term limits prevent Tully from seeking another term as mayor, a seat he has held since 2011. Tully was a member of the Downers Grove Village Council from 2001 to 2009.
District 3 includes all or parts of Burr Ridge, Clarendon Hills, Darien, Downers Grove, Hinsdale, Lemont, Naperville, Westmont, Willowbrook and Woodridge.
During Tully's tenure as mayor, Downers Grove had the highest bond rating from Standard & Poors, a fire department with an ISO Class 1 rating and a police department with a top Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies rating, putting them both in the top 1 percent of the nation, according to a news release.
“Through a combination of continual innovation, lean practices, intensive economic development and collaboration and consolidation, we have proven that quality key services can effectively be delivered to residents without raising property taxes,” Tully said in the release. “The communities of District 3 deserve – and should demand – well-experienced and proven representation on the DuPage County Board.”
The primary election will be March 20, 2018. District 3 board member Gary Grasso’s term expires in November 2018, as does the term of the replacement for state Sen. John Curran, R-Downers Grove, who served on the board before being appointed to fill an Illinois Senate vacancy.
Tully has served as president of the DuPage Mayors and Managers Conference. He was a member of the county’s Stormwater Management Committee and the Mosquito Abatement Task Force.
He is a founding member of the District 58 Education Foundation and a board member of Hope's Front Door. He also is a member of the Downers Grove Lions Club and a board member of the 100 Club of DuPage County.
Tully is a litigation partner with the Chicago office of the law firm of Akerman LLP. He is a graduate of the DePaul University College of Law. He and his wife, Shanon, have two sons.
