Suspect steals donation jar from Downers Grove 7-Eleven counter

DOWNERS GROVE – A donation jar containing $30 to help pay a woman’s medical bills reportedly was stolen Aug. 27 from 7-Eleven, 5105 Fairview Ave., Downers Grove, according to a police report.

The store’s night clerk, who was collecting money to help pay his wife’s medical expenses, told police a customer took the container from the front counter at 2:05 a.m. The jar featured a “Go Fund Me” sticker, as well as the name and photo of the clerk’s wife, police said.

The clerk told police he did not immediately realize the container was missing. However, surveillance footage shows a man take the container while the clerk was not watching, police said. He paid for his purchase and walked out of the store holding the container in his left hand. The clerk said the man left the area on a bicycle.

The suspect was described as a black man in his 50s, 6 feet tall and weighing about 200 pounds, police said. He had black hair, brown eyes and stubble on his face. He wore a long-sleeved white T-shirt, brown baggy sweatpants with a thick gold stripe or lettering on the sides and white gym shoes, police said.
