Suburban Life Sound Off: Aug. 21-27

Strange crime

I read that a car burglary in Downers Grove involved the stealing of a wallet, a rosary and a spare tire. I understand why the wallet was stolen. It contained a combination cash, credit cards and ID than can be used for identity fraud. The theft of the spare tire has me scratching my head. Besides the fact that it is big, bulky, and heavy, many newer automobiles don't even have a spare tire. I can't believe that spare tires are worth much. Further, you would think that stealing a spare tire...takes precious time, which could mean the difference between fleeing the scene unnoticed and someone seeing the burglary and giving a description to the police. The theft of the rosary really puzzles me. Most rosaries don't contain gems or pearls. They are usually made with wood or glass beads. Probably the cash value of a rosary is small, when compared to a cellphone, tablet, GPS unit or laptop. Many people I know received their rosaries for confirmation or graduation. Some people I know have rosaries that belonged to a deceased family member or close friends. I suspect that the victim is probably very upset about the loss of the rosary. This thief is just plain mean.

Who's to blame for Trump's presidency?

Trump is unlike any president that has come before and not in a goodway. He is more than an embarrassment. He is unstable and dangerous. I blame the news media that gave him a pass and did not press him for details. I blame the corporate news media that put ratings over public service when they gave him $2 billion in free coverage. I blame the people who voted for him who didn’t take the time to determine who/what they were really voting for. I blame the Democratic Party for being so oblivious to the mood of the electorate and determined to anoint Clinton. Bernie Sanders, a little known senator from a small state, almost defeated Clinton had it not been for interference from the DNC tipping the primaries in Clinton’s favor. But I mostly blame the Republican Party that has for the past 40 years been demeaning the role of government in our society, has been legislating to reward their wealthy and corporate masters and has been perpetrating election fraud with their voter suppressio ntactics. ... Our nation has come to a fork in the road. Which direction will we take in the upcoming elections?

Term limits are needed

Now, the Republican tax reform. Let's be honest. No subsidies, no entitlements or extras. Flat tax. All will be good. Not! All would be good if the evil government did not overspend every year! Thus term limits. A civil duty to society everyone should run for a form of office. Keeps the lifetimers who have their say from 50 years ago as all right! How about now? ... Lifetimers need to go! We need leadership that represents each individual, not parties!
