ROMEOVILLE – Village officials approved three projects at their last meeting to accommodate an increased participation in youth sports and event attendance.
The village awarded contracts to begin construction on new practice fields for a variety of sports such as soccer, football, lacrosse and more. The new fields will be on more than seven acres next to the Joliet Junior College campus on Romeo Road.
Village officials also approved the addition of more amenities to Discovery Park – because original bids came in lower than expected – to make way for more parking, bicycle racks and lighting for two fields to be added to the project.
“We continue to see an increase in our youth athletic programs,” said Romeoville Mayor John Noak in a press release. “Teams are always looking for field time and, by adding the fields near JJC and the lighting to Discovery Park, we can accommodate more teams and sports.”
Construction on Discovery Park is underway and will include five athletic fields, three half basketball courts, two sand volleyball courts, two sets of beanbag toss games, and a trail system. The two sites will add over 30 acres of recreation space for youth athletics. The village also approved the beginning of construction of restrooms and concession stand facilities for the Deer Crossing Park Amphitheater.
These projects are just a few of the many the village currently is working on or is planning including industrial projects, residential projects, commercial projects, the JJC campus expansion, a Romeoville Toyota, a new Metra Station and an I-55/Weber Road interchange.
