WHEATON – The mission of OMG! Cafe at 390 W. Front St. in downtown Wheaton is to "nourish the community through quality food, service and goods."
I came away feeling quite nourished after a recent visit to the restaurant. Whether you are looking to get a quick bite to eat before catching the train into Chicago – the restaurant is conveniently located across from the Metra train station – or just roaming around downtown Wheaton looking for a satisfying homemade meal, OMG! Cafe delivers on all counts.
OMG! Cafe has an extensive menu, so it took me a while to decide what I wanted. Along with breakfast items such as an egg wrap, create-your-own scrambler and bagels, the restaurant also has a number of sandwiches and wraps on its menu, including a corned beef Reuben, roasted chicken wrap and barbecue chicken flatbread.
I settled on the appropriately named Wheaton Bowl. I thought the array of ingredients – including crumbled bacon, crumbled sausage, tomato, onion, creme fraiche and scrambled eggs intermixed in a rice bowl – was intriguing. There also is a Fox Bowl that features such ingredients as onions, peppers, mushrooms, green onions and spinach with scrambled eggs in a rice bowl.
A few minutes after sitting down, the Wheaton Bowl arrived piping hot and bursting with flavor. The freshness of the ingredients was evident after the very first bite.
The ingredients also played off each other well, with the crispiness of the bacon complementing the tartness of the tomato. Even though I was quite full after finishing my meal, I was tempted by the array of fresh muffins on display. I decided to try a blueberry muffin.
The muffin was literally bursting with fresh blueberries, each one sweeter than the last. It was a great choice to top off an afternoon of culinary delights.
For the coffee drinker, OMG! Cafe also sells a variety of brewed and specialty coffee as well as teas and smoothies. The restaurant has a full espresso bar.
And for those Elmhurst-area residents, OMG! Brunch and Boutique, 105 S. York Road, Suite A100, Elmhurst, offers an expanded menu featuring such items as Irish shepherd's pie and shrimp and grits.
The Mystery Diner is a newsroom employee at Suburban Life Media. The diner's identity is not revealed to the restaurant staff before or during the meal. Only positive dining experiences will result in published reviews.
