Cantigny Park to celebrate Father's Day weekend with Family Night, art fest

WHEATON – From the showing of "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" to an art show, Cantigny Park will offer a little something for everyone during Father's Day weekend.

The park's first Family Night of the summer on June 16 will feature a cruise night theme, and participating show vehicles will receive free entry. The night will include live music by Joe Kalish at 5 p.m. and Final Say at 7 p.m.

"Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" will be shown at 8:30 p.m., and "Star Wars" characters from the 501st Legion will be in attendance for photo opportunities. All activities are free with parking, which is $5 per car.

Family Nights are on the third Friday of the month at Cantigny Park, 1S151 Winfield Road near Wheaton.

"In the summer we’ve added live music and a cruise night element, plus families can stay for our Friday night Movie in the Park after dark," Cantigny Director of Visitor Services Magan Ascher said in an email. "These nights are fun and relaxing for the whole family, and the only cost is $5 per car for parking. With their growing popularity and because they overlap the dinner hour, we’ve added food trucks to the summer Family Nights as well. Visitors are welcome to bring picnics, too."

Cantigny Park also has activities lined up for the rest of the weekend as well. From 10 a.m to 4 p.m. June 17 and 18, juried artists involved in a wide range of mediums, including sculpture, glass, acrylic, oil, jewelry, wood and fiber, will participate in the Art in Bloom Cantigny Fine Art Festival.

Musical acts Classical Blast and Guitarra Azul also will perform as part of the festival, and there will be art activities for children. Food trucks will be at the festival, or attendees are welcome to pack a picnic.

Admission is free with a $10 parking fee. Cantigny has been hosting an art show since 1988.

"We wanted to showcase our beautiful gardens as well as beautiful art," Ascher said. "We usually see around 4,000 to 5,000 people per day."

The festival will feature 75 artist booths. The majority of artists are from Illinois, but some come from as far away as Florida, South Carolina, Nebraska and Pennsylvania, she said.

Artists will provide demonstrations throughout the day.

"Wax Hands will be here. It is a fun activity for adults and children to make their hands out of wax," Ascher said.

The cost is $5 per hand. Classical Blast and Guitarra Azul previously have performed at the festival.

"It adds a nice ambiance for the guests and the artists," Ascher said. "They can get a bite to eat at one of the food trucks and enjoy the music inside the beer and wine garden while taking a break from the show and then continue through the artist’s booths."
