Why Bleyer was selected:
Bleyer scored the Dukes’ first two goals in the early going to ignite a 7-0 rout of Proviso West in a regional semifinal game at York on May 17.
Bleyer and her York teammates couldn’t have asked for a better start to the playoffs. Bleyer scored twice about five minutes apart in the first eight minutes of the game, and five other Dukes got on the scoresheet against Proviso West in a big win that sends York into the regional final against Fenwick on May 19. Bleyer, the Suburban Life Athlete of the Week sponsored by Gracik Makinney Real Estate Group, spoke with sports editor Jason Rossi about the hot start, moving on to the regional final, and more. Here’s an edited transcript:
Rossi: What allowed you to get going early to help the team get that early lead?
Bleyer: We had a lot of motivation from the start because this was our first playoff game, so I saw the opportunity and I scored on it.
Rossi: How was the team able to collectively have such a big day on offense?
Bleyer: We connected passes really well and we know where each other is on the field, so we’re able to get the passes to each other and score on those good passes.
Rossi: How does it feel to start the playoffs with a 7-0 win?
Bleyer: It’s good. It gives us some good motivation and momentum for the rest of the playoffs.
Rossi: When you win by a big margin and play well in doing so, how much confidence do you gain?
Bleyer: It’s good. It gives us good confidence for the rest of our season?
Rossi: What does the team have to do May 19 to ensure another win to move on?
Bleyer: We need to keep up what we’ve been doing: connecting passes, working hard and working for each other, and scoring on our opportunities.
