SCHAUMBURG – Facing perennial state power St. Charles North in the first round of the PepsiCo Showdown tournament April 8 at Olympic Park in Schaumburg, Downers Grove North’s girls soccer team suffered a 3-1 defeat.
The Trojans tied the game early in the second half before the North Stars netted two more goals. DGN will play at Glenbard East on April 13 in a consolation bracket game.
The Redwings topped two Chicago schools April 8, defeating Solorio 12-6 early in the day before earning an 8-2 win against University of Chicago Lab School.
Tyler Bautista and CJ Birck each drove in three runs against Solorio to help starter Mike Dunn earn the pitching win.
Joe Wardell brought in three runs and Tate Davison drove in two to make a winner of Steven Arrowsmith in the game against UC Lab School.
Downers Grove North/Hinsdale South
The Hornets battled back from an early 2-0 deficit and scored a 16-7 win against the Trojans on April 8 in Downers Grove.
South scored six runs in the top of the second for a 6-2 lead.
When the Trojans cut the deficit to 6-4 the Hornets scored seven times in the fifth and three more times in the sixth to put the game away.
Jaxon Herchenbach hit a three-run home run in the fifth and finished the game 2 for 5 with four RBIs and two runs scored. Mike Stoltz brought in three runs, and Danny Mazzei, Matt Uba, Jon Colucci and Will Yurchak each drove in two runs.
Sam Condon was 3 for 4 with two RBIs and a run scored for the Trojans. David Giuliano and Adam Bandola each scored twice while driving in a run, and Robert Southworth went 3 for 4 with a double and two runs scored.
Downers Grove South/Hinsdale Central
In a home game against Andrew on April 8, Michael Hoes brought home Nick Stacey in the bottom of the third inning, but that was all the offense the Mustangs mustered in a 5-1 loss against the Thunderbolts.
Andrew Zapka and Mitch Mulvihill both homered in Hinsdale Central’s 13-1 home win against DGS on April 7. Zapka also doubled as he went 3 for 3 with five RBIs and a run scored. JP Medick tripled and drove in three runs for the Red Devils.
The Sentinels topped Kennedy 20-0 and 11-1 in a home doubleheader April 8.
Joe Donovan was 2 for 4 with a home run and seven RBIs in the first game, while Michael Kokoszka, Matt O’Leary and Jacob Melau each drove in two runs. Alex Marotta worked four innings for the pitching win.
Kokoszka drove in four runs, and Donovan and Robbie Burns each had two RBIs in Game 2 as O’Leary earned the pitching win.
Downers Grove North
The Trojans notched two victories against host Naperville Central on April 8, winning 7-2 and 9-0. Estelle Czech earned the pitching win in the first game, while Madison Christ won Game 2.
Downers Grove South
The Mustangs topped Naperville North 16-6 in five innings April 7 for their first win of the season.
Randi McKay was 3 for 4 with a grand slam. Kara McKenna went 2 for 3 with two doubles, two RBIs and two runs scored. Sarah Major had two hits and three RBIs, and Morgan Meyer pitched four innings to earn the win.
McKay, McKenna and Rachel Davis each knocked in three runs, while Lindsay Valero and Kaitlyn Wilson each had two RBIs as part of a 22-hit attack in a 20-9 win against Addison Trail on April 8.
Downers Grove North
Mike Kudelka scored an 8.30 to place fifth on pommel horse for North’s best individual showing at Hinsdale Central’s Canino invite April 7.
Michael Dukes was sixth on vault (9.20), and the Trojans placed fifth with a 141.50 score.
Nolan Holmes was second on floor exercise (9.60) and placed second in the all-around (51.750) at Central’s Anthony Canino invite April 7.
Holmes was third on vault (9.35) and fourth on rings (8.90), just ahead of teammate Nick Altandush (fifth, 8.870).
The Red Devils placed third with a 151.220 score.
Kwame Lipscomb took third on pommel horse (8.60) and fourth on horizontal bar (8.70) as he placed fifth in the all-around (49.450) at Hinsdale Central’s Canino invite April 7.
The Hornets were sixth as a team with a 138.40 score.
