DOWNERS GROVE – Though the ballot is not yet finalized, those vying for seats on the Downers Grove Grade School District 58 and Community High School District 99 boards of education appear to be taking shape for the April election.
The two look fairly well-contested, and District 58 could represent a large turnover on the board.
Of the seven candidates listed on the ballot as of Jan. 19, only one incumbent is currently listed as running for re-election – Christopher Heppner, according to the DuPage County Election Commission.
The board and staff of the district have come under public scrutiny for a number of issues over the past several months, including changing of library resources and curriculum. Board meetings have frequently been filled with dozens of concerned parents and teachers, with oft-heated discussion between board members and audience.
Joining Heppner on the April ballot are Susan E. Helsdon, Beth Taylor, Gregory T. Harris, Darren Hughes, Jill V. Samonte and Tracy Weiner. All listed candidates reside in Downers Grove.
In District 99, two of three incumbents up for re-election are trying for an additional term. Current board Vice President Terry Pavesich and Rick Pavinato are seeking another term, while longtime board member Julia Beckman is currently unlisted. Running alongside the two are Joseph G. Clifford of Woodridge and Sherell Fuller and Daniel Nicholas of Downers Grove.
