Crystal Lake man killed in Woodstock crash, McHenry County Sheriff's Office says

A 55-year-old Crystal Lake man was pronounced dead after a three-vehicle crash Wednesday when his semitractor-trailer overturned and crashed in unincorporated Woodstock, according to the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office.

After a preliminary investigation, officials determined that about 6:52 a.m. a 2008 Pontiac Vibe was traveling east on Route 176 when the vehicle rear-ended a 2013 Dodge Dart.

Officials said the collision caused the Dodge to be pushed into the westbound lane of Route 176, where it then hit a 1999 Peterbilt semitractor-trailer traveling west. The Peterbilt rolled over, skidded across the westbound lane and collided with several trees on the side of the road.

The driver, who was the sole occupant of the Peterbilt, was pronounced dead at the scene by the McHenry County Coroner’s Office.

The driver of the Dodge Dart was taken to Centegra Hospital – Woodstock for precautionary reasons and since has been released, and the driver of the Pontiac was taken to Centegra Hospital – Huntley for precautionary reasons and since has been released.

According to the sheriff’s office, both drivers were wearing seat belts, and the cars’ air bags deployed.

Members of the Marengo Rescue Squad District, Union Fire Protection District, Woodstock Fire Protection District, McHenry County Conservation District Police, the Illinois State Police Commercial Motor Vehicle enforcement, Union Township Police Department, Illinois Department of Transportation and McHenry County Department of Transportation were called to the scene to assist.

Route 176 and Franklinville Road between McCue Road and Peterson Olson Road in Union were shut down for a few hours because of the crash and didn’t reopen until about 4:15 p.m.
