CRYSTAL LAKE – Since their daughter’s terminal diagnosis, a lot of the daily routine has changed at the Greene house.
The Greene family recently learned that 7-year-old Abby Greene has an aggressive brain tumor called a diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma. The illness has a zero percent survival rate thus far. Abby is in treatment five days a week in downtown Chicago, and her mother, Rachel Greene, had to quit her jobs.
But the community’s support has been overwhelming to the family, said Abby’s father, Adam Greene.
“We have had so many helping hands,” Adam Greene said. “We have friends and family that are doing everything they can to make our lives easier during this period. Even complete strangers – all of McHenry County has been reaching out.”
A fundraiser is planned Nov. 19 at the Dole Mansion in Crystal Lake. The event will include live music, raffle prizes, a silent auction and appetizers. Proceeds will benefit the family for things such as medical bills, Metra tickets so the family can go downtown for Abby’s treatments and any other unexpected costs.
“It’s tough,” Adam Greene said. “It’s the daily routine. She is in treatment five days a week, so my wife has had to stop working. … We have had assistance from people, and that has gotten us through.”
Abby recently was honored at a Crystal Lake South High School football game when she was made an honorary cheerleader, flipped the pregame coin and received dozens of carnations. She will attend the November benefit, Adam Greene said.
“Abby is really looking forward to seeing the outpouring of love and support from the community,” he said. “People have really gone above and beyond with the donations and contributing. It’s going to be a great event.”
