From the Editor's Desk: Care4 Breast Cancer 5K is less than 2 weeks away

This year’s big Care4 Breast Cancer 5K Run/Walk is right around the corner, with a lofty goal of raising $150,000 to help battle breast cancer for underserved individuals in McHenry County.

My wife, Maria, the better runner and columnist in the family, has participated in the race several times while I drew parent duty at home. But now that the kids are older, Oct. 16 is a good time to bring the whole family to Woodstock North High School.

While I enjoyed running in my youth, I usually only do it now if I’m being chased. But a 5K for Family Health Partnership’s Breast Cancer Fund is the least I can do. The race is scheduled for 8:30 a.m.

Many teams and individuals are already signed up on the event website, and the campaign had reached one-third of its goal by Tuesday afternoon. Join an existing team or start your own.

Even if you can’t participate in the race, there’s an option to make a contribution to one of the teams, individuals or just make a donation to the cause.

Many local businesses, including the Northwest Herald, are sponsoring this year’s event.

All of the event proceeds will stay right in McHenry County and be used to assist Family Health Partnership in giving those underserved by health insurance access to breast cancer screenings, mammograms and other treatment resources.

Breast cancer will affect one in eight women in their lifetime, and no one should face a harder battle because they couldn’t get access to preventive care. So come join us for the 16th annual Care4 5K.
