To the editor:

In my mail recently was a glossy flier, paid for by us taxpayers, from my U.S. congressman, Peter Roskam, R-6th District. With our current political environment, I was anxious to see what my congressman is doing about key issues of interest to me and his constituents.

Sadly, here is what I received: a taxpayer-paid flier with the following “critical” information:

“Congressman Peter Roskam: Proudly representing the hardworking people of Illinois’ 6th District in the United States Congress.

• 1,100 Constituent Cases Resolved

• 800 Tours Scheduled

• 40,000 Letters to Constituents”

800 tours scheduled? Really?

What happened to essential legislative policy and his work on behalf of me and other constituents of the 6th District? Clearly, Mr. Roskam has very little to report if Washington, D.C., tours are among one of his 3 top accomplishments.

Maybe this brochure is just a sad window into Mr. Roskam’s work on our behalf in Washington … all he has to brag about is 800 tours conducted. Really?

I think I’ll vote for his opponent, Amanda Howland, instead. She would have a record of real accomplishment in Washington, including protecting Social Security and Medicare and reforming student loan financing. And she wouldn’t waste taxpayer money bragging about how many tours she’d conducted.
