Throughout the late spring and summer, McHenry County residents have the opportunity to get outside and listen to music.

From city bands, to rock and roll beach shows, concerts are offered in places including Algonquin, Lake in the Hills, Cary, Crystal Lake, McHenry, Ringwood and Woodstock.

This year is the 132nd season for the Woodstock City Band, one of the oldest in the county, John Scharres said.

Scharres is the managing director of the Woodstock Opera House, which oversees the band, he said.

Concerts happen at the Park in the Square rain or shine, Scharres said, and an ice cream social is sponsored by a different group each night. The concerts are a great time to come out and meet your neighbor, and the park is a “delightful space” in the evenings, he said.

“It’s a big slice of hometown America,” Scharres said. “And that’s why it’s always been tradition here.”

The band is made up of about 50 musicians, ranging in age and experience, he said. Many have been performing with the band for more than 20 years, Scharres said.

At Glacial Park in Ringwood, people can listen to local music on the patio deck with a “majestic” view of the landscape and oak trees, said Wendy Kummerer, McHenry County Conservation District’s communications manager.

The district started hosting the concerts two years ago, she said.

“It was another way to introduce people to Glacial Park, and to get them out and appreciate nature,” Kummerer said.

Crowds of about 200 to 300 people show up to the concerts that are held rain or shine, and the event has an intimate and community feel, she said.

Katie Hughes, director of communications and marketing for the Cary Park District, said the district tries to bring in bands that interact with the audience.

Many children will dance in front of the band, or on stage, at the Cary Concerts in the Park, which have been taking place for more than 10 years, she said.

“It’s a fun and inexpensive evening to spend in your community park,” Hughes said.
