Healthy Lombard expanding Flat Apple summer program

LOMBARD – The Healthy Lombard Foundation Board has redesigned the Summer Flat Apple Program to include participation by more of the foundation’s partners.

In the past, Healthy Lombard co-sponsored four events during the summer that focused on helping kids stay active, the news release stated. They included activities such as a kids’ race, a bike ride and fitness challenges.

This summer, Healthy Lombard expanded the number of partners that could offer kid-focused activities to include anyone interested in helping youth be active. To be considered, partners selected the day and time of their event and then presented their idea to the foundation board. Beginning June 8, approved events will be listed on the HL calendar on the foundation’s website at

Some events will be ongoing. For example, when kids ride their bikes over to LiNiTo Cycle off the Great Western Trail, accompanied by one or both of their parents between June 8 and Aug. 1, they will receive as their reward a quick bike safety check and a Flat Apple raffle ticket.

Other partners who will post activities include the Lombard Park District, Lexington Square, DuPage County Health Department, ESSENTRICS of Lombard, 2XL Strength Fitness, Kiwanis Club of Lombard at the Kids’ Corner during Cruise Night, Health Track Sport Wellness, Helen Plum Memorial Library, and Lilac Post 5815 during the Civil War Days Reenactment.

Once a child is registered, HL will send email reminders to update them about upcoming activities.

According to HL Board President Jay Wojcik, HL is hoping that some partners schedule events that will attract the nonathletic child and, through having a great experience, motivate those kids to try out one or two other summer events.

As in the past, the parent or guardian of each participant will be asked to complete a one-time, online registration for participants beginning June 6. They then receive a copy of the 2016 Flat Apple logo to show as their entrance ticket for any Flat Apple event. Registration is necessary so HL can contact parents/guardians about upcoming summer events and be able to match the child’s name to winning raffle tickets.

Raffle prizes will include a bike, Beats headphones, exercise equipment and gift cards. Winners will be selected at the August Healthy Lombard Partner meeting. Only registered kids can win. HL will notify all winners, and they and their parents/guardians will be invited to a celebration on a Saturday in September to receive their prizes.

By participating in an activity, one will receive a raffle ticket. If a child is not pre-registered, there will be an opportunity to register at each event. However, to save time it is highly recommended that participants preregister. Registration is open to any child from preschool to high school.

“Everyone who participates is a winner since they will be rewarded with a summer full of healthy activities,” Wojcik said in the release. “Flat Apple is an easy way to have a fun time this summer and spread the message that if we are going to win the challenge to curb childhood obesity everyone needs to be involved. Children mimic adult behavior, so everyone needs to model a healthy and active lifestyle.”
