OAK BROOK – Real Urban Barbecue in Oak Brook celebrated its one-year anniversary this fall with special events.
During 2015, the eatery drew more than 92,000 guests and sold 19 tons of pulled pork and 50 tons of brisket, the news release stated.
To help commemorate the milestone, Real Urban Barbecue hosted student athletes from the Hinsdale South wrestling team and Hinsdale Central basketball team as they battled it out in the Hungry Home Wrecker 7-Pound Sandwich Eating Competition.
The sandwich was piled high with slow-smoked pulled pork, Andouille sausage, coleslaw, Brain Buster pickles and a hot shower of Texas sauce on a 2-pound bun.
Student athletes from Hinsdale South’s wrestling team included Mitch Mendel, Matas Astrauskas, Eric Sitkiewicz and Thomas Carroll. Participants from the Hinsdale Central basketball team were Anthony Brescia, Brad Huth, Peter Blust and Tomas Misiunas.
In a close competition, Hinsdale Central finished the sandwich first with a time of 15 minutes, 25 seconds. The Hinsdale Central basketball team walked away with bragging rights, earned a cash donation for its athletic department and gets a plaque on the Real Urban Barbecue Wall of Fame.
