Manning students make cents count for cause

WESTMONT – There’s a very good reason teacher Patrick Padilla was pelted with pies.

It all started when the students of Manning Elementary School in Westmont decided to raise money in support of the fifth-grade teacher’s first run in the Chicago Marathon.

To raise money for Organization for Autism Research, the students waged a penny war that brought in more than $1,500, according to a news release.

It noted that because they raised significantly more than the original goal of $500, students were selected from each grade level to throw whipped-cream pies at Padilla to celebrate their success on behalf of a wonderful cause.
