St. Charles water main replacement project continues

ST. CHARLES – The Fifth Avenue water main replacement project will require about five to six more weeks of work, city officials said Monday.

The project, which began in late April, has hit some delays, said John Lamb, the city’s environmental services manager. Lamb on Monday provided St. Charles aldermen with an update on the project during their Government Services Committee meeting.

The water main is being constructed on North Fifth Avenue, or Route 25, between North Avenue in St. Charles and the Q Center, 1405 N. Fifth Ave. in St. Charles, Lamb said.

There were a number of water main breaks at the beginning of the project, and additional work is being required to clean and complete pipe flushing, Lamb said. There has been more debris on site than expected, he said.

“There’s just been some complications when you’re doing underground work like this … even though everyone has done their homework,” he said.

The next five to six weeks will involve pressure testing and at least a week to repave the road, Lamb said.

The project is incurring additional costs, which city staff is addressing with the project engineer, Lamb said.
