Westmont girls soccer in regional title game, DGN, DGS hope to follow

High school girls soccer teams started the season with hopes of making it to the state finals. With the playoffs starting next week, here’s what the postseason has in store for area teams such as Downers Grove North, Downers Grove South and Westmont.

Downers Grove North

Regional: Trinity

Sectional: Hinsdale Central

Sectional seed: No. 4

First match: 4:30 p.m. Tuesday vs. No. 13 Reavis

Outlook: In tight playoff games, one goal can mean the difference between a win and a loss. Considering the Trojans had recorded 11 shutouts this season as of Monday, it’s clear their defense, led by freshman keeper Grace Stevenson and defenders Alyse Dutcher, Kacey Ford and Arlinda Osmani, is up to the challenge of postseason play.

Goals have been a bit harder to come by at times, but North had six-goal outings in wins against Curie and Oswego East, and five in a victory against Willowbrook this season.

If the seeds hold, North would face No. 5 York in the regional championship game May 23.

Downers Grove South

Regional: Glenbard East

Sectional: Hinsdale Central

Sectional seed: No. 3

First match: 4:30 p.m. Tuesday vs. No. 14 Curie

Outlook: The Mustangs’ 11-6-2 record as of Monday might not look impressive, but few teams have played against a tougher schedule. During the regular season, South played against top-5 sectional seeds Naperville North, Wheaton North, Conant, Batavia and York.

A balanced offense has seen 10 different players find the back of the net this season, including double-digit goal scorers Autumn Rasmussen, Lexi Dimovski and Ava Porlier. The way the Mustangs have handled themselves in some tough situations has them primed for an extended playoff run.

“I like the attitude the team is showing as we head to the business part of the season,” head coach Chris Hernandez said. “The team is very determined to keep taking the proper steps to reach the next level and accomplish the goals we set at the start of the season.”

With a win against Curie, South would face either No. 6 seed Glenbard East or No. 11 Chicago Kelly in the regional final May 22.

Regional: Westmont

Sectional: Lisle

Regional seed: No. 2

Outlook: The Sentinels hosted Hope Academy of Chicago in a Class 1A regional semifinal Tuesday and won 7-0. They advanced to the regional championship match at 4:30 p.m. Friday to play against top seed St. Joseph.
