New faces take star turns for Elmhurst, Lombard diamond teams

Each spring provides a chance for baseball and softball players to make their mark, some for the first time at the varsity level. Here are a few players having breakout seasons on the diamond.

Baseball

Chris Roycroft

School: Willowbrook

Year: Senior

Impact: Roycroft is following up a strong basketball season with a dominant spring on the mound. He has a 0.77 ERA and a 4-1 record in five starts. Roycroft has struck out 37 in 27 1/3 innings of work.

Matt Sabatini

School: York

Year: Senior

Impact: Sabatini got off to a rocky start in non-conference play, but the pitcher has rattled off three straight complete game victories in West Suburban Silver starts, including shutouts against Lyons Township and Downers Grove North. He has a 2.81 ERA.

Michael Sebby

School: Glenbard East

Year: Junior

Impact: Sebby was on varsity last year, but has turned into a true ace this spring. His effectiveness hasn't always translated into wins, but he has been solid with a 2.08 ERA and 34 strikeouts in 30 1/3 innings.

Nick Villasenor

School: Addison Trail

Year: Sophomore

Impact: Villasenor has emerged as the Blazers' ace, and a good one at that. He has a 1.52 ERA and four wins so far this spring, while striking out 44 batters in 46 innings.

Softball

Nikki Cuchran

School: Montini

Year: Freshman

Impact: Montini has plenty of returning talent this season, but Cuchran has stepped right in and contributed as a freshman. On a team that hits plenty of home runs, the third baseman is tied for the team lead with seven homers.

Kaitlyn Falduto

School: IC Catholic

Year: Sophomore

Impact: Falduto was on varsity last year, but has become an everyday player in the lineup at second base this season. She is one of the team's most improved players according to coach Frank Reaber.

Kyra Kroll

School: York

Year: Freshman

Impact: It hasn't taken Kroll long to get comfortable playing varsity softball. The outfielder has earned the No. 2 spot in York's batting order with a .441 batting average, 23 RBIs and 25 runs scored in 20 games.
