Balanced Lyons Township gets by Downers Grove North

Lions take over sole possession of conference lead after 63-41 win

LA GRANGE – On plenty of occasions this season Harrison Niego has had to carry the scoring load for Lyons Township, but Saturday night wasn't one of those nights.

A balanced scoring effort from the Lions paved the way to a 63-41 win against visiting Downers Grove North in a West Suburban Silver game.

LT (17-4, 7-1 WSS) had four players score in double figures. Senior Jaquan Phipps led the way with 14 points. Harrison Niego and Connor Niego each scored 13 points and Joe Brunner added 11.

"We play real well as a team," Phipps said. "We get the ball moving a lot and a lot of guys on this team shoot with confidence. We all can just play within each other so everyone can score when they need to."

The Trojans (12-7, 2-6 WSS) scored the first six points of the game, but the Lions responded with the next seven and led 19-16 after a quarter. LT closed the first half on a 10-2 run to take a 34-22 lead into the half.

Jordon Kedrowski led the Trojans with 13 points.

DGN lost for the second game in a row following an eight-game winning streak. Last night the Trojans lost to Proviso West 56-45.

"We haven't beaten anybody on the road of this caliber or last night's caliber so we haven't really accomplished the things that we could accomplish at the beginning of the season," coach Jim Thomas said. "We have to get better."

Meanwhile, LT is now in sole possession of first place in the Silver after Hinsdale Central lost at Glenbard West. That was the Red Devils second conference loss in as many days.

"We got a long way to go before we can talk about that," LT coach Tom Sloan said. "We were just talking about it in the locker room, it doesn't matter what the other teams do. We have to take care of one opponent at a time."
