Thumbs up to Downers Grove South senior Elizabeth Kazmierczak for participating in a Earth Watch teen expedition in Belize this summer, getting a first-hand look at how over-fishing sharks for their dorsal fins has led to dwindling numbers of some species. During her time in Belize, Kazmierczak helped lay Baited Remote Underwater Video Stations (BRUVS) on the ocean floor, and checked various shark lines, cataloging, tagging and releasing the animals. Kazmierczak will begin applying to colleges this fall, and we wish her the best in all her future environmental science studies.
Congratulations to all the artists and attendees who made this weekend's Downtown Downers Grove Art Festival a memorable experience. More than 130 artists from around the globe, including Downers Grove residents Lisa Domaszewicz and Jessica Cepele displayed work at the annual event, which also featured an array of musical performances. Thank you to everyone who made the event possible, we are counting down the days until the 2015 festival.
