Fenwick 31, Carmel 20

Fenwick opened its season with a win in Mundelein against host Carmel.

The first start in a Fenwick uniform for quarterback Jack Beneventi was a winning one. The senior transfer from Benet threw for a touchdown in the Friars’ victory.

Carmel led 7-0, but Fenwick turned that into a 14-7 lead at halftime. Beneventi threw for a touchdown to Joe Buzinski to double the lead in the third. In the fourth quarter, Connecticut commit Aaron Garland had a pick-six to make it 31-14 Friars and put the game out of reach.

Fenwick (1-0) plays Bishop Lynch from Dallas at 1 p.m. next Saturday at Concordia. Last year, Fenwick won the battle of the Friars 32-14 in Dallas.

Proviso West 13, Evanston 7

The Panthers beat the Wildkits on Friday in Hillside after losing in Evanston in three overtimes last season.

Evanston led 7-0 entering the fourth quarter after a second quarter touchdown. However, Chance Haney ran for two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to give the Panthers the win. Haney scored from 11 yards out on the first play of the fourth quarter and gave West the lead on a 16-yard run with 9:15 remaining.

West (1-0) travels to Downers Grove South in Week 2. The Mustangs lost to Benet 26-16 in the opener.

Elmwood Park 13, St. Joseph 8

The Chargers lost the season opener to one of the two teams they picked up a win against last season.

Armone Elam broke an 86-yard run for the Chargers’ only score.

The Chargers will host Kelvyn Park, which lost to Steinmetz 24-16, at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
