GLEN ELLYN - Led by a stingy defense and an impressive offensive output through the air, Glenbard West opened the 2014 season with a 21-10 victory over Wheaton Warrenville South Saturday afternoon.
This was the final scheduled regular season matchup between the two ranked teams. With the DVC expanding to nine teams next year, the Hilltoppers and Tigers will be unable to continue their rivalry unless they happen to meet in the postseason.
The final installment turned out in the home team's favor as Glenbard West overcame an early 3-0 deficit to lead 14-3 at halftime. Donahvon Vaughn scored from one-yard out to get the Hilltoppers on the board and then caught a four-yard TD pass from Kyle Kramer with six seconds left before intermission.
Andrew Ives had put WWS on the board with a 26-yard field goal.
In the second half, Sam Brodner found the endzone on a four-yard run to increase the advantage to 21-3.
Tigers' QB Josh Prueter answered with a 61-yard touchdown jaunt with 10:25 left in the fourth but the visitors could pull no closer.
Glenbard West travels to take on Morton next Saturday while Wheaton Warrenville South plays Maine South.
