Nazareth looks to turn talent into wins

Nazareth Academy quarterback Carson Bartels drops back for a hand off at practice on Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2014. The Roadrunners expect to have a strong offensive line this season.

LOADED LINE: The offensive line has four returning starters. Jack Shutack (6-foot-5, 285 pounds) and Michael Owens (6-4, 273) have FBS offers and twins Patrick Kilcommons (6-3, 278) and John Kilcommons (6-4, 295) have received interest from Dartmouth. Returners at quarterback Jonah Beauduy and Carson Bartels are in competition for playing time, but whoever gets the bulk of the snaps will likely have good protection.

PLENTY OF TALENT: Expectations are high due to a large number of experienced returners and a deep collection of players being recruited by colleges. Seniors Dmitri Joe, Decx Kelly-Martin, Julian Love and Kevin Jackson are among the players to already receive Division I interest. "Last year the cool thing about it was we didn't have many big seniors," senior captain Dan Bakovich said. "Now we have a bunch."

DEAN ADDS TO RB DEPTH: New Nazareth senior Nolan Dean started on varsity for three years at Neuqua Valley, playing two years primarily as a linebacker and starting at running back last year. He rushed for over 250 yards in a game against Metea Valley. Coach Tim Racki expects Dean to draw big college interest soon, and he joins an already deep running back core that returns Ivory Kelly-Martin and Julian Love.
