ELMHURST – The IC Catholic boys golf team competed in the inaugural Independent Suburban League ~ Metro Suburban Conference Challenge on Aug. 20 at Cog Hill. The Knights finished fourth out of 13 teams, led by Connon Leahy (81), Trey Morris (81), Maddie Hurt (85) and Stone Brinkman (90).
"Maddie and Trey played very well, and I was pleased to see them step up on the heels of their strong freshman year," IC coach Donald Sujack said. "They both really worked on their games over the summer and it's paying dividends now. Connon Leahy has been a nice addition to our team. For a freshman to play well and contribute a score in his first event is quite an accomplishment. All in all, this was a positive showing against a quality field on a quality golf course."
On Saturday, the Knights traveled to Antioch Golf Club to compete in the Bulldog Invitational hosted by Grant. The Knights finished third out of eight teams, lead by Connon Leahy (79), Maddie Hurt (95), Trey Morris (96), Anthony Clementi & Stone Brinkman (97). Individually, Leahy earned a second place medal for the tournament, behind only defending 2A state champion Jordan Hahn of Richmond Burton.
"The scores were high for most everyone, as the weather played havoc with a very quirky golf course," Sujack said. "Standing water in almost every bunker and very soft conditions throughout made scoring extremely difficult. In spite of that, Connon played like a veteran, with two 'bounce back' birdies and uncommon poise for a freshman. Maddie, Trey, Anthony and Stone all worked hard to hang in there, and we were pleased to finish third."
IC lost to Illiana Christian 151-168 in a dual on Tuesday. They play St. Joseph Wednesday and Guerin on Thursday.
