GENEVA – The city of Geneva was ranked third among the top 10 safest communities in Illinois, according to a real estate brokerage company’s rating system.

St. Charles was 11th on the list.

Movoto bases its ranking on 2012 FBI crime statistics that counted the number of murders, violent crimes, property crimes and total crimes per 100,000 people. If a town did not report its information to the FBI, it was left off the list.

According to its website, the criteria the company looked at were murder, rape, robbery, assault, burglary, theft and vehicle theft. Then the company weighted the categories of murders, violent crimes and property crimes, so they would be worth 30 percent of the overall score, where the total number of crimes would be worth 10 percent.

To compare big and small places fairly, the company found each of these crime rates based on crimes per 100,000 residents and ranked each with a score from one to 115 for murders, violent crimes, property crimes, and total crimes, all per 100,000, with one being the safest possible score, according to the website.

The No. 1 safest town in Illinois according to Movoto is Homer Glen, followed by Buffalo Grove, Geneva, Bartlett, Roselle, Lisle, Glen Ellyn, Glenview, New Lenox and Libertyville.
