AD switch at York sees Murphy out, Wagner in

ELMHURST – There’s more personnel movement within York’s athletic department, but this one is for positive reasons.

Athletic director Ron Murphy is leaving just over a year after taking over as the athletic director for the Dukes to become an assistant athletic director at West Aurora.

At West Aurora, Murphy will work under Jason Buckley, who was Murphy’s predecessor as varsity head boys basketball coach at Oswego East.

Murphy was an assistant coach under Buckley and took over for the 2012-13 season. He was announced as AD at York in May 2013.

Rob Wagner was named the interim athletic director in a release sent out by York on Aug. 15. Wagner had previously spent four years as York athletic director and slides back into that position after serving as Assistant Principal for Finance & Student Activities.

“The people at York were great to me,” Murphy said. “[York principal] Diana Smith and [District 205 superintendent] David Pruneau could not have been more supportive. I think Rob Wagner will do a great job.”

Murphy said the move was about being closer to home. He said West Aurora will significantly cut down on his commute.

“I’ve got two young boys,” Murphy said. “This was one of those opportunities to strike a balance personally and professionally. Those opportunities don’t come along often.

“I’m proud of what we accomplished in my year at York. There’s a lot of great coaches and people in place there.”
