GLEN ELLYN – A local charity is hoping to raise additional funds in the coming months to help pay for school supplies for area students.
Supplies 4 Success is a grassroots group founded in Glen Ellyn six years ago by Karen Evans, who wanted to provide for people who are less fortunate.
"Our purpose is to raise funds to provide school supplies and backpacks … for all the low-income students [in Districts 41 and 89]," Evans said.
Supplies 4 Success is part of the nonprofit Partnership for Educational Progress Foundation.
Students in pre-kindergarten to eighth grade who qualify for free and reduced lunch are eligible to receive a kit from the program.
All funds donated to Supplies 4 Success will pay for the kits distributed in schools. A kit includes school supplies and a backpack for the student. Any additional funds will be used to buy winter outerwear for students, including coats, gloves, hats and boots.
Glen Ellyn School District 41 Chief Communications Officer Erika Krehbiel said the district has 832 students who qualify for the free and reduced lunch program.
Donations are down slightly from last year, Evans said, adding that each year is a little different in terms of how much they need.
This year, Supplies 4 Success has 1,000 students to provide supplies for, up from about 700 the year the organization started.
The group has already purchased the supplies, which have been distributed to the schools, but it still has to pay the bill.
"We are not where we need to be to pay," she said. "We could use some donations."
Community members can donate by visiting www.thepepfoundation.org or sending a check to Supplies 4 Success at 435 Pennsylvania Ave., Suite 145, Glen Ellyn. A donation of $25 provides a kit and backpack for one student.
