David Cooke (right), 15, of Elmhurst, works with his team of Boy Scouts on Aug. 9 to build a bee box for his Eagle Scout project.

THUMBS UP: David Cooke of Elmhurst used his Eagle Scout project to help out the Elmhurst Park District as well as the native bee population. The 15-year-old York High School student organized a team of Boy Scouts to build a bee box where bees can lay their eggs. The box will be installed near the botanical garden at Wilder Park where the bees can collect pollen from neighboring plants for the larva to eat when they hatch. Thanks for your service to the community.

THUMBS UP: This was a fun way to give back. Elmhurst Firefighters Union Local 3541 held its inaugural Wiffle Ball tournament Aug. 9 at Berens Park and raised $700 to be donated to several charities. And congratulations to Elmhurst fire Lt. Dan Focht, whose team brought home the title.
