Algonquin prepares to switch trash collection

ALGONQUIN – The village's trash collection service provider is set to change on Sept. 1 from Waste Management to Groot, along with the days people have their trash picked up.

Groot is shifting to a Thursday-Friday schedule from the village's current five-day a week schedule.

In general the portion of town to the east of Hanson Road, as well as the the area within the Golf Club of Illinois, will have its trash collected on Thursday. The portion of town west of Hanson Road, as well as the Willoughby Farms and Brittany Hills subdivisions will have trash collected on Friday, said Assistant Village Manager Mike Kumbera.

The areas along Longmeadow Parkway and around Westfield Community School will have trash collected on Friday as well.

However, because Sept. 1 is Labor Day, trash collection during the week will be delayed by one day.

Groot will continue to provide the same collection program as Waste Management, the village said.

For those who use stickers, the new cost will $2.85 each for the first year of the five-year contract.

Residents who still have Waste Management stickers, there are ways to obtain refunds.

People can bring their stickers to the Ganek Municipal Center from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. where employees will refund up to 20 individual stickers. Hours will be extended to 7 p.m. on Sept. 16, 23 and 30, the village said. Refunds of more than 20 stickers also will be made, but in the form of check that will be sent in late October, Kumbera said.

Groot also will honor Waste Management stickers for up to three weeks after the switch, concluding on Sept. 19, the village said.

Residents who use the trash cart program, will automatically be enrolled into Groot's cart program, the village said. The new cost will be $20 a month.

During the week of Aug. 25, after residents' normal collection, Waste Management cans will be removed and later replaced by a Groot cart, according to a village flier.
