GURNEE – Gurnee Park District's lifeguards are champions for six years now at a state competition.

Last month, the Illinois Park and Recreation Association held its annual Lifeguard Games in Oak Lawn.

This year's competition had more than 40 lifeguard and junior lifeguard teams.

Gurnee Park District entered two lifeguard teams and two junior lifeguard teams this year. Each team competed in seven events to determine a champion. Both teams were defending champions for their respective divisions for the past five years before the event. They took first again this year, making them six-year champs.

“We have been fortunate enough to showcase this now for many years with many new competitors each year,” said Kara Moss, the district's aquatic manager. "She went on the say that this award is not just for the lifeguards. A lot of other staff members that work as attendants, customer’s service or lesson staff help out with practices and fundraise for the event."
