La Grange police respond to Verizon store armed robbery

LA GRANGE – The La Grange Police Department responded to an armed robbery at a Verizon store, 52 S. La Grange Road, just before noon Tuesday.

Two Verizon employees were in the store when two offenders entered and showed a silver handgun, according to a police report. According to the report, an Apple laptop and a cell phone were stolen in the robbery.

The offenders fled from the scene in a silver car headed southbound on La Grange Road.

No customers were in the store at the time of the robbery and no injuries were reported.

Police described one suspect as a male, black, in his 20s, about 5-feet 9-inches tall with dreadlocks or braids. He was last seen wearing a grey hoodie and blue jeans. The second suspect was described as a male, black, about 5-feet 7-inches tall and of slender build.

A recent string of armed robberies bearing similarities to Tuesday's robbery in La Grange have occurred at T-Mobile stores in the area since July. La Grange Police Chief Mike Holub said that, although police have not found any connection between the robberies, it's something that investigators are taking a close look at.

"We're aware of the area [robberies]," Holub said. "The similarities are unnerving."

In the most recent robbery, two male offenders robbed a T-Mobile located at 3850 Harlem Ave. in Lyons at 12:17 p.m. July 14 at gun point.

The offenders – described as black males with one in a black hoodie and the other in a red windbreaker – entered the shop and displayed a gun. The offenders then forced employees to open a safe an provide cell phones and other items to them. Employees were then locked in the rear of the store while the offenders fled.

Two additional robberies were reported in Lyons both on July 6 – in one instance at the same T-Mobile store that was robbed July 14 – and the second robbery at another T-Mobile location at 8499 Ogden Ave.
