Margarita Rivera and Lee, 9, are hoping they can raise $50,000 to build a handicap accessible addition to their Berwyn home with support from the community.

BERWYN – A fundraiser will be held to cover construction costs for a handicapped-accessible bedroom and bathroom to be built for 9-year-old Lee Rivera of Berwyn from 2 to 10 p.m. Saturday at St. Leonard Parish, 33rd Street and Clarence Avenue.

Margarita and Jaime Rivera adopted brothers Sal and Lee, and daughter, Angelica. Lee was later diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy, and the time is coming when such an addition to the family's home will not be a luxury, but essential to his well being, the family said. The family hopes to build a handicap accessible bedroom, bathroom and install a ceiling lift to help Lee live a more independent life.

For those with basketball skills, the For the Love of Lee 3-on-3 and the 3-Point Contest will be presented by guest emcee Laurence Holmes of AM670, The Score.

Entry is $50 per person for the 3-Point Contest at 2:15 p.m., where each contestant will get 14 shots from around the arc. The top three shooters advance to a 5-shot Championship Round to determine the first place shooter, who will win $100.

The 3-on-3 Double Elimination Championship begins at 3:15 p.m. A $120 entry fee is required for each four-person team. The first place team wins $240.

There also will be a Walk for Lee, held at Proksa Park on Sept. 6, with a softball game between local police and firefighters to raise money. Supporters are hoping to raise $50,000, which is the expected cost for the construction.
